Earlier this year we announced our acquisition by Quark, and now we are pleased to introduce the next generation of PressRun. By bringing two great brands together we are able to create the ultimate digital publishing solution, the new App Studio.

With App Studio designers can now use both InDesign and QuarkXPress, along with HTML5 and XML, to create apps for the iPhone, iPad, Kindle Fire, and Android devices. The PressRun brand will soon be retired, but all the functionality – and more – will move forward under the App Studio brand. Current PressRun users will be transitioned to the new App Studio in what should be a seamless process in early November.

Looking ahead you can expect:

A new website and improved service

A refined and enhanced publishing portal

Improved InDesign support

Automated app builds

Below are some questions we thought might come to your mind as you learn more about App Studio. If you have others that are not answered here, please reach out to us directly.

PressRun Customers FAQ

Q. Does the migration to App Studio require an app update for PressRun apps?
A. No. The migration to App Studio will not require an app update. Current PressRun apps will continue to function as they were built prior to the migration.

Q. Will I see any changes when I log into my PressRun account?
A. No, not yet. For now you’ll continue to login to my.pressrun.com. Once we make the switch to App Studio, when you log into the App Studio publishing portal you will notice the new branding and you’ll also discover new controls and features. However, App Studio will have a similar navigational approach to PressRun to ensure you feel immediately at home. We will be informing all PressRun customers in advance of the switch and our support team will be available should you have any questions or concerns when this happens.

Q. Do I need a need a new login or username?
A. No, you will not need a new login or username.

Q. Why did you rebrand to App Studio?
A. Mobile IQ, the company behind PressRun, was acquired by Quark earlier this year. The new App Studio represents the next version of the PressRun technology that, for the first time, is also integrated with Quark’s digital publishing technology. Combined as App Studio, we now offer the only cloud-based digital publishing solution that supports content creation from QuarkXPress, InDesign, HTML, XML or any combination of these in a single app.

Q. When will the change happen?
A. The migration from PressRun to App Studio will happen in early November.

Q. Will I notice a difference between PressRun and App Studio?
A. App Studio features a more refined App Studio portal for managing apps and issues as well as enhanced support for InDesign CS6 with more new features to come. The App Studio publishing portal has also been localized for the first time into French, German and Japanese.

Q. Will App Studio continue to support InDesign?
A. Yes, absolutely. App Studio will continue to support InDesign and will be adding more features for InDesign users in line with the App Studio release. Currently App Studio supports InDesign 5, 5.5, and 6.

Q. Will there be any change to my current agreements in place with PressRun?
A. No. Current contract agreements and support arrangements will continue unchanged. App Studio features tiered pricing and the majority of existing PressRun customers will be added at the App Studio enterprise level.

Q. Is there any change to my account representatives or PressRun team?
A. No, the team you work with now will not change.

Q. Should I alert my accounting team of the name change?
A. Yes. The name change from PressRun to App Studio will be seen on future invoices.

Q. I work with the Quark/Mobile IQ/PressRun team on custom apps. Will I experience changes to my team or apps?
A. No. Customers who work with the now Quark team on custom apps will not experience any changes to their team, apps, or the app development process.

Q. I have questions that aren’t addressed here. Can I contact someone directly?
A. Definitely. So that we can provide you with answers specific to your work with us, please contact your account representative.

Facebook’s decision to develop a new iOS application in native Objective-C code was not simply to improve the mobile experience, but rather too increase potential revenue from mobile users.

Facebook has been under increasing pressure from investors since shares slumped to almost half their value in May. To counter this loss, Facebook decided that it could increase revenue by increasing the time users spend on the mobile site. The quick fix was creating a more responsive app for iPhone users, which led Facebook to the decision to create a native iOS app and shift away from HTML5.

Facebook has made no plans to shift from HTML5 for the development of new apps to support other devices or platforms. Facebook remains a strong believer in HTML5 like most app developers because it supports so many different types of devices and platforms with the same code base. HTML5 allows Facebook apps to support 7,000 different devices, reaching over 500 million phones.

Ian Jacobs a representative from W3C stated, “HTML5 is the most interoperable format in the industry, working on thousands of devices with sufficient function and performance for almost all applications. That is why we have seen widespread adoption.”

PressRun utilizes HTML5 for those very same reasons. At PressRun our objective is to provide clients with options when it comes to tablet and mobile publishing. We rely on HTML5 because it provides portability, supports interactivity, and is efficient offering smaller files sizes. Using HTML5 ensures that PressRun not only supports current platforms but also will support new platforms faster than solutions dependent upon proprietary issue formats for content. Within HTML5 every element can be manipulated and transitioned to create rich and interactive user experiences.

We understand the benefits and limitations of HTML5 as a nascent technology. There is no better solution for content rendering than HTML5, but things such as storage and network communications are still best done using native code. PressRun uses the best of both HTML5 and native to deliver a responsive but highly portable experience. At PressRun we are confident in our approach and the continued use of HTML5 for content. HTML5 is an evolving standard, which allows us to adapt our format to make use of the latest features and performance enhancements — so our clients can remain ahead of the curve.

LONDON, UK – April 9, 2012 – Quark announced today that Metro, the UK’s leading urban media brand, published a revamped iPhone version of their app using PressRunTM, the publishing platform that brings print publications to digital devices using HTML5, combining rich design and XML automation.

Metro’s new iOS iPhone version adds to the brand’s growing digital product suite as it looks to offer its on-the-move consumers more by providing easy access to its cross platform content.

With an intuitive interface and navigation, Metro’s new app allows readers to access the digital edition of the newspaper on their iPhone, as well as offering interactive features like full screen videos, audio clips and photo galleries.

Thanks to a free subscription service, users can receive Metro’s iPhone Edition automatically every day through Newsstand, which also provides off-line reading capabilities. Featured by Apple in their iTunes Editor’s Choice section, the new Metro app includes retina display support delivering high-resolution images and optimized content at a fraction of the typical file size for PDF-based apps, guaranteeing a faster download and a sleeker reading experience.

The launch follows the success of the Metro Tablet Edition, also created with PressRun (http://www.pressrun.com/clients/metro-tablet), which is nearing 600,000 downloads since its launch in October 2011. The iPad app was the winner of the 2012 Newspaper Awards for Newspaper App of the Year.

Thanks to PressRun, Metro are able to automate the majority of the publishing process from XML and then use the layout software that they are familiar with, Adobe InDesign, to create custom pages for the cover, section fronts, etc. While streamlining multi-platform publishing, PressRun allows Metro to maintain a strong editorial vision for presenting content across different media and easily scale the production process for new platforms.

Jamie Walters, Product Development Director at Metro, said, “We’re continuing to innovate and develop our mobile and digital offerings and it’s great to see our tablet edition go from strength to strength, providing advertisers with further innovative and custom creative solutions.” He added, “We’re committed to providing urbanites more ways to engage with Metro throughout the day across the channels that best suit them.”

Shaun Barriball, Vice President of Mobile at Quark, said, “As a daily publication, Metro has incredibly tight deadlines and works around the clock to deliver news as it happens. Being able to produce engaging content and deliver it automatically to multiple devices is the key to succeed in such a fast-paced industry. At Quark we were thrilled to help Metro produce their successful iPad app last year and we are now delighted to continue to work with them on their digital publishing journey with their iPhone edition.”

Metro’s iPhone app can be downloaded for free from the App Store at http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/metro-phone-edition/id465059515?mt=8.

PressRun 3.0 can be downloaded for free from the App Store at http://itunes.apple.com/app/pressrun/id431600497?mt=8.

World Leading Provider of Medical Information Releases HTML5-based Web Application Produced with Quark’s Cloud-based Digital Publishing Solution

LONDON, UK – August 21, 2012 – Quark announced today that the BMJ (British Medical Journal) produced their first Web Application with PressRunTM, the leading tablet and mobile publishing solution that uses HTML5 and XML-based workflows to deliver interactive experiences across multiple devices. The BMJ tablet app is optimized for use on the iPad and is free to subscribers and British Medical Association members without an iTunes account.

The BMJ is the first general medical journal to offer a Web application (http://www.bmj.com/tablet) to its subscribers. It is now offered in addition to a best-in-class iPad app launched in 2010, also produced with PressRun (http://www.pressrun.com/clients/bmj-british-medical-journal/), that has achieved an impressive 40,000 downloads. Thanks to the new tablet app, BMJ’s subscribers can access the journal directly from the Web browser on their iPad and enjoy a digital interactive experience with video and audio. With key content from the weekly print issue designed for tablet reading, the BMJ tablet app also allows offline reading.

David Payne, Editor of bmj.com, explains, “The future of medical information is mobile, and the BMJ is investing in its mobile presence. Following the launch of our iTunes app 18 months ago, the journal is now available free to tablet users as part of a personal or institutional subscription. With the new Web app our users can read the BMJ on the iPad without the need for an iTunes account, and without having to download an entire app on to their device or wait for the entire issue to download before they can read an article.”

With about 40 percent of mobile traffic to bmj.com coming from iPad users and just over 17 percent originating from mobile devices with Android operating systems*, the BMJ Group opted for Apple’s tablet as the first device to implement their cutting-edge digital publishing strategy, but thanks to PressRun’s HTML5 cross-platform capabilities, BMJ can quickly and easily be deployed to new devices and operating systems in the future.

Payne said, “The BMJ has a proud history of ‘firsts’ when it comes to digital access. It was the first major general medical journal to have a full text website in 1998, the first to create an iPad app in 2010, the first to move to the Apple Newsstand in 2011, and the first to offer a Web application. Our digital publishing partnership with PressRun means that we can confidently look forward to extending our reach to other tablets in the near future.”

With an XML-based content production workflow, BMJ easily migrated to the new platform by repurposing media-independent components of information without using further internal resources or needing to build in extra time for the new publishing channel. BMJ’s content strategy allows for articles, pictures, videos, audio, and graphics to be output to XML and delivered automatically to the Web app via PressRun, thus eliminating costly manual operations. The ability to publish their content directly on the iPad, bypassing the App Store approval process, also means that BMJ’s tablet app readers have the most up-to-date content and timely app updates.

Shaun Barriball, Vice President of Mobile at Quark, said, “It is a pleasure to work with innovative publishers like the BMJ, who are determined to give their readers the best experience in digital and mobile. At Quark we are passionate about the future of HTML5 and take full advantage of what it offers. It’s simply the fastest and easiest way to create a highly customized, rich and consistent experience across many platforms – all driven from tools publishers already use every day, such as InDesign and even XML feeds. Because PressRun takes advantage of what each device already does best, the lead-time to support a new device is extremely low – which means our customers can roll out custom app experiences on new devices faster than ever before.”

The new BMJ tablet app provides the weekly BMJ print journal’s selection of research, commentary, and education, specifically designed for offline tablet reading. It is free to all current BMJ institutional and personal subscribers and BMA members and is available via the Safari browser at http://bmj.com/tablet (currently only accessible to iPad users). Users are advised to save to their iPad Home Screen while in the library for the best user experience.

*according to mobile traffic figures for May 2012 provided by bmj.com. For more details please see http://www.bmj.com/content/345/bmj.e4877 and http://www.bmj.com/highwire/filestream/594697/field_highwire_fragment_image_l/0.jpg

About the British Medical Journal

The BMJ (British Medical Journal, http://www.bmj.com/) is an international peer reviewed medical journal and a fully “online first” publication. In May 1995 the BMJ became the first general medical journal to launch itself into cyberspace as bmj.com going on to win Best Business Product or Service at the PPAi Interactive Publishing Awards 2000, Best Integration of Media at the AOP UK Interactive Publishing Awards 2002, and to be voted one of the web’s five most useful health sites by Guardian Online readers and contributors in 2004. Continuous daily publication on bmj.com started in July 2008, with all content appearing online before print publication. The BMJ is published by BMJ Publishing Group Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of the British Medical Association.

Our acquisition by Quark marks an exciting milestone in the evolution of digital publishing. An evolution in which publishers deploy the next generation of digital publications, that use a combination of automation and pixel perfect design, using desktop tools to deliver immersive tablet and mobile experiences.

The digital publishing market has swiftly evolved from the early days of web PDFs and iPad apps full of huge JPGs to a highly fragmented ecosystem of platforms and devices. This fragmentation is set to only increase over time. Specialising in app development and HTML5, we have established a reputation for producing award winning, highly interactive, digital experiences across the full range of platforms with PressRun.

This acquisition by Quark will mean we continue to stay ahead of the curve. With increased investment in design and technology, we can jointly reach additional markets such as finance, industry and government; delivering vertically optimised mobile and tablet experiences in a fast, efficient, sustainable and cost effective way.

This acquisition means:

We can continue to author our agnostic approach to content authoring tools, whilst being able to improve our automation support through Quark Enterprise Solutions

We are in an even better position to continue our commitment to support all significant platforms with additional development resources

We can offer sustainability – with the continuing fragmentation of platforms, we can include automation and repurposing of content to efficiently support this fragmentation, using Quark’s existing automation technology

We will benefit from a pool of support documentation and operational resource to build upon our existing high standards for customer engagement

The acquisition will enable us collectively to continue to be thought leaders and remain at the forefront of a rapidly changing industry.

Leader in App Development Helps Create Ultimate Guide that Connects Art Lovers to Great Art Wherever They Are

SAN FRANCISCO and LONDON (May 8th, 2012) – PressRun™, an industry leader in tablet publishing solutions and the company behind award-winning iPad magazines for BBC, BMJ, and Time Inc., announced today that the Art Fund, a national charity which helps museums and galleries to buy, show and share art, has launched a new iPhone app built upon PressRun’s extensive experience in app development. The new app, Art Guide, is available for free download from Apple’s App Store and is the ultimate guide for seeing and experiencing art across the United Kingdom.

PressRun is a leader in creating robust and interactive apps for large audiences, capitalizing on the best features native to each mobile device. Leveraging this expertise, the company worked with the Art Fund to develop Art Guide, which helps art lovers to find great art wherever they are. The app provides users with the most comprehensive listings guide for more than 600 museums and galleries across the U.K. It also allows art fans to find world-class exhibitions, from top shows to hidden gems, and helps them plan out their visits by providing opening times, prices, directions and up-to-date information. Additionally, users can save favourite exhibits in a wish list and receive notifications of when those shows will end.

Although the app has only been available for a short time, there have already been over 37,000 downloads, and it has received stellar reviews from those who have used it. It currently has a five-star rating from more than 75 users, who have praised the app for its numerous features and comprehensive listings. In addition, the app was recently designated “App of the Week” on iTunes® and was also recognized as a top app by New Media Age, a publication dedicated to covering the business of interactive media. PressRun and the Art Fund are working on releasing Art Guide for the Android in the near future.

Carolyn Young, Director of Marketing and Membership at the Art Fund said: “We have been delighted with the response to the launch of this app. PressRun has produced an app that really delivers on user experience, as ratings and downloads to date testify. The quality of their work is really a product of an excellent design and development process that really keeps the end user at its heart. We’ve thoroughly enjoyed working with them.”

“It was a pleasure working with the Art Fund to develop this first-of-its-kind app for the iPhone that puts the most relevant information about the U.K.’s art world right at the fingertips of art lovers across the country,” said Shaun Barriball, CEO of PressRun. “The highly interactive Art Guide app has been very well received, and we expect it to do equally as well on Android.”

Company’s Innovative Digital Publishing Platform Selected Among Several High-Profile Nominees

SAN FRANCISCO and LONDON (April 30, 2012) – PressRun, an industry leader in tablet publishing
solutions and the company behind award-winning iPad magazines for BBC, BMJ, and Time Inc.,
announced today that the PressRun-developed Metro Tablet Edition app, the digital version of the
world’s largest free newspaper and the third biggest newspaper in the U.K., has been named App of the
Year at the 2012 Newspaper Awards.

The prominent U.K. Newspaper Awards are dedicated to newspaper and news media production,
honoring excellence in printed and digital media. The App of the Year award was open to all UK and
international newspaper apps for iPhone, Android and iPad platforms. The apps nominated for the
award, which included the digital versions of several high-profile publications, were judged on the
technical innovations used in the design and implementation of the app, the commercial and business
model for the app, and facts and figures illustrating the success of the app. Based on these criteria,
Metro Tablet Edition was selected as the winner.

The Metro Tablet Edition app was built upon PressRun’s industry leading digital publishing platform
that turns print into truly interactive tablet experiences. The app allows users to read a tablet version
of Metro cover to cover in a visually attractive format and offers several interactive features, including
a ‘Window on the World’ photo gallery, news videos, film trailers and music samples. Available for free
download from the App Store, the app currently has a 5-star customer rating.

“We are very excited that Metro Tablet Edition has been recognized by the Newspaper Awards for this
high honor,” said Shaun Barriball, CEO of PressRun. “While our clients and their customers have long
been pleased with our cutting-edge digital publishing solutions, this prestigious award lends even more
credibility to the value and capabilities of the PressRun platform and further sets us apart from the
competition.”

Linda Grant, Managing Director at Metro commented: “The team and I are really proud to see our tablet
app receive this industry-wide recognition. We’re always looking to innovate in the mobile arena and
provide tech-savvy urbanites with relevant and engaging digital products for their busy urban lives.”

“The growth of our mobile offering, both on tablet and phone, combined with the success of
Metro.co.uk and increased readership of our newspaper – a mobile product in its own right – supports
our ambition to continue our development of our mobile and digital products and as such extend the
appeal of our leading brand.”
