FAQ’s
Review some of the most frequently asked questions associated with the PressRun platform:
Why should I turn my print content into a tablet publication?
Because readers love them, because tablets are widely used and because you can increase your readership and revenue.
Your tablet publication will give your current readers & subscribers lots of reasons to stay with you. It will also attract new readers who may not want (or be able to get) the print versions. Research shows that readers spend a lot more time (we’re talking up to four times more) with a tablet publication than its equivalent print version. You can charge more for targeted premium interactive advertising. I’ve seen other tablet magazines that take a pdf-style approach. Is that wrong?
That’s wrong in many ways. The pdf-style approach (big, flat pages where text is really an image) has disadvantages that seriously limit your potential:
- The user experience is boring and lacks interactivity.
- The file sizes are massive. (5-10x bigger than a PressRun issue).
- The custom app set-up is expensive to build & maintain.
- In short, it’s a big mistake to spend a lot more to get a lot less.
What is PressRun anyway?
PressRun is software that takes output from the print layout software you currently use (like InDesign) and turns it into tablet-friendly experiences.
You get a branded tablet app where you can sell new issues, back issues and subscriptions – and each issue is not just fully interactive, it’s immersive.
Where does the interactivity come from?
Your designers do it – using the same software they use for the print product. You may not have known that tools like InDesign have so many interactive capabilities, but they do.
You can do slideshows, video, audio, animation, Flash (though not on iPad magazines, which don’t do Flash), 360º photography, hot buttons, cross-linking, swiping, scrubbing, pinching and tilting.
How much time will it take my designers to do this?
About 25-30% of the time it takes them to do the print edition (remember, they’re using all the same assets).
So you don’t just generate a pdf file?
We use HTML5, the next-generation web language supported by everybody. And when the tablet platform has some cool native features or capabilities, we use those too.
Do I need to use a new content management system?
No, use the one you’re already using.
Can I only create iPad publications?
Not necessarily. The beauty of HTML5 is that it is much easier to port your branded tablet app over to new platforms like Android, Windows or RIM.
How do I actually sell stuff?
You sell new issues, back issues and subscriptions through the commerce store native to each tablet platform, such as The App Store, Amazon Marketplace, Google Play etc.
Will you help us get up to speed?
Of course we will. We have ramp-up teams that will configure your branded app and show your designers how to add interactivity.
From the moment you say, “I do” we can get your branded tablet app ready in a few days and help you get your first issue live in a few days too.
How do advertisers make interactive ads?
They use the PressRun Ad Creator™ that works just like the main PressRun Engine. They add interactivity and send their ads into your workflow. And you can charge a lot more for an ad with video in it than a plain old flat ad.
